Released 7th November (certificate to be confirmed), £19.99 Stand-up doesn’t often translate well to TV. Watching a comedian from your sofa is vastly different from sharing an auditorium with hundreds of mildly inebriated people, eager to be entertained. But Dave Spikey’s relaxed, chatty style can make the silliest gag seem funny – even when you’re sitting at home. Co-writer of Phoenix Nights and team captain on Eight Out of Ten Cats, Spikey’s star has risen since his days supporting Cannon and Ball. And some of the material on this DVD proves why, such as the desperate need for men to read on the toilet, even if they’re reduced to studying the back of a Domestos bottle.
That’s not to say that the entire show is side-splitting stuff, though. An inspired routine about never buying birthday cards is immediately followed by a deathly skit based around the premise of buying sanitary towels after mistaking them for bath towels. But in a routine lasting over 70 minutes weak spots are bound to crop up and the hits definitely outweigh the misses.
