CD: MOJO Presents an introduction to The Isley Brothers
Now, call me a Philistine but until I heard this CD and read the excellent sleeve notes by Mojo editor Geoff Brown, I didn’t know just how good The Isley Brothers really were (or ‘are’ as the original funk soul brothers are still doing it 45 years on). They’ve influenced everyone from The Beatles, Public Enemy, Ice Cube and even Wham!
This is a group that once had Jimi Hendrix playing in their backing band, signed to Berry Gordy’s Motown in the Sixties and next year will release an album on the iconic Def Jam label. These brothers are cool. So draw the blinds, turn up the stereo and get down to blinding tunes like ‘Its Your Thing’, ‘That Lady’ and ‘Harvest For The World’. If that’s not enough to put a smile on your face, just think about Michael Bolton who in 2001 had to pay out $5.4million to the Brothers for nicking whacking great bits of their song ‘Love is a Wonderful Thing’. Eat that Bolton.
