Protect your little one this winter with these top tips from Joe Mulligan, head of first aid at the British Red Cross.

Playing in the snow, winter walks, cosy evenings – winter can be full of fun and special times with your family. But  it’s important to be prepared for any surprises. Here’s some simple advice from the British Red cross on how to help your baby or child in a first aid situation.

Febrile seizure

These cold months are the time to make sure your little ones are kept warm. But if they have a fever or get overheated, they can sometimes have a febrile seizure. Although frightening, this is not normally harmful.

Signs of a febrile seizure:

Your baby or child might twitch, arch their back, stiffen their body and have clenched fists. They might look red-faced, feel hot to touch and be sweating.

How to help:

  • Protect them from injury. Do not restrain them.
  • Remove outer clothing to reduce their temperature. If the room is hot, open the window.
  • After the seizure, help them to rest on their side with their head titled back.
  • If the symptoms persist – or it is their first seizure – seek medial advice.
