If you’re a parent, you’ll know most sports cars are impractical. I’ve got three young kids – and all wanted to join me in my latest test car – Porsche’s 718 Cayman GTS. The issue? It’s only got two seats, so I had to make three trips – to stop them from losing the plot.

Yes, I know – another first world problem, but should you deny yourself an automotive treat just because you’ve spawned offspring? “No” is the answer. So, if money isn’t an issue, and you feel a midlife crisis coming on – then the Porsche, on test here, could be for you.

Assured cornering

The beast houses a sizeable 2.5-litre engine and belts out 365hp. That will propel you to 62mph in a mere 4.3 seconds and on to 180mph. The Cayman handles corners with assurance – its recipe of a mid-mounted power plant and rear-wheel drive gives it colossal levels of adhesion. Combine this with ultra-precise steering and exceptional brakes, and you have a sports car that’ll stick a grin on your face.

The German coupe is effortless to drive on all kinds of tarmac, and it’s entirely at home on the day-to-day commute (if you have one). But take the Porsche to a track day and your mates will need something very fast to keep up with you.

What’s more, thanks to the model’s front and rear load compartments, you have enough cargo capacity for a couple of weekend bags. So, if you need to escape for some adult-only weekend time, you can! Or I guess you could do the nursery or school run, but only if you have one sprog.
