Book the babysitters and put on your dancing shoes, as multiple Tony-Award winning musical FELA has kicked off its summer stint at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.
The Broadway hit tells the story of the late Nigerian musician, Fela Kuti, his rise to fame in 1960’s Africa and America, his creation of Afrobeat music and his political uprising during the 70’s, which led to a band of 1,000 soldiers being assigned to end his public performances.
The show’s original production team included international rap star Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, and showbiz husband and wife, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, which is reflected in the quality of the live music, being nominated for best musical album at the 2011 Grammy awards.
And it’s not just the music that has contributed to the show’s success, expect infectious dance routines and ‘ecstatic’ group numbers created by the legendary Bill T. Jones, who won the Best Choreography award at last years Tony’s, and is renown as one of the best in the business.
The musical’s stateside popularity will surely be reflected in the capital, as Jones explains it has the power to connect to a whole host of different people in a celebration of a true musical and cultural legend: “Fela's music is unwieldy, but it is brilliant and it is music that really wants groups of people to come together and enjoy," he told MTV.
So head down to Sadler’s Wells and experience some of that infectious African culture that never fails to put a smile on your face.
FELA is showing from 20th July – 28th August, and for more information and tickets, visit: http://www.sadlerswells.com/show/Fela
