A month away from turning 30, Michael, played by Zach Braff, takes stock of his life. With a successful career, close friends, a loving partner and a baby on the way, there seems little cause for complaint. But Michael laments the fact the rest of his life feels planned out and lacks surprises. That’s until he meets sassy college student Kim and, instantly attracted, he’s soon meeting her after class… Based on Italian movie L’Ultimo Bacio, The Last Kiss explores the desire to take control of your future alongside the need to assume responsibility for how your actions in doing so affect others. Braff is a convincing ‘rabbit in the headlights’, first overcome by torpor and later trying to avoid his deception being discovered. The actors playing Michael’s friends all deliver strong performances, although not enough time is given to their stories, reducing them to little more than stereotypes. There’s the stud, bedding a different woman each night, the dumped guy who can’t cope with rejection and the new dad who realises he no longer loves his wife. Casey Affleck is extremely effective as unhappy young father Chris – and there are times you’d rather be following his dilemma rather than watching the more self-absorbed Michael.
