The Luxury Collection’s Algarve haven delivers five‑star comfort, adventure, and connection for families

There’s a particular kind of dad-and-son trip that feels like therapy. Just time together that’s easy, fun and a bit special. For me and my 13‑year‑old son, Gabriel, Pine Cliffs Resort on Portugal’s Algarve coast, part of the Luxury Collection, became exactly that. Perched above the red cliffs of Praia da Falésia and only thirty minutes from Faro Airport, it gave us something we rarely get at home: uninterrupted one‑on‑one time.

We already have a close relationship, but I realised how much of his growth – mentally, emotionally, educationally – I outsource to school, teachers, coaches and friends. Strip away TV, phones, work, social lives and general background noise, and you’re left with something great: just the two of you, with nowhere to rush off to.

The beautiful and invigorating Pine Cliffs, with its terracotta walkways, pine trees and sea air, was a perfect backdrop to that space.

I downloaded the Pine Cliffs app after booking and planned our days loosely before we arrived. Golf, tennis, padel, spa time (for me), pool time (for both of us), and relaxed times around meals. The structure meant we did a lot, but it never felt hectic. We stayed active, happily tired by evening, and refreshed enough each morning to go again. The resort’s sprawling size and sheer number of available activities meant we had a perfect playground to take advantage of, even when just chilling enjoying the views and our Golf Suite room.

Letting go of expectations on the golf course

Our first activity was one I’d been massively looking forward to: the golf course. Normally, I’m the one giving tips, correcting swings, over‑coaching. I’m coordinated, I like to get things right, and I have pretty high expectations. That’s not always helpful when your child just wants to enjoy being out there.

Booking a lesson with Miguel at Pine Cliffs was one of the best decisions of the trip. I told myself very clearly: don’t coach, just play. Miguel encouraged my son brilliantly, gave him little adjustments, and let me step back into the role of playing partner rather than sideline instructor. The result? Gabe relaxed, hit better shots, and wanted to play more. The nine‑hole course, with its red‑cliff edges and ocean views (especially on holes 5 and 6, perfect photo moments), became less about scorecards and more about shared jokes and victories.

That became a theme: once I stopped teaching and started just being there, he leaned in. Missing his phone wasn’t even a consideration most of the time – there was always another hole to play, another rally to chase, another swim to race. Total dad win.

Eating like kings on our dad-and-son break

We loved the dining options at Pine Cliffs. Breakfast at Jardim Colonial was our daily briefing room. The space is bright and airy, tables dressed neatly, and the buffet impressively laid out – pastries, fruit and cold cuts on one side; eggs, bacon, hot dishes and local cheeses on the other; plus a station where pancakes and omelettes are cooked to order.

Two breakfast waitresses took us under their wing: each morning they greeted us with the kind of warmth that felt like they’d known us for years, remembering where we liked to sit and how I take my coffee. It sums up Pine Cliffs perfectly: everyone seems highly trained, but also personally invested – as if they’re all co‑owners in making sure your stay goes right.

Lunches at Corda Café and dinners at O Pescador were just as delicious. Spicy fajitas, messy burgers, beautifully grilled fish. There’s something very liberating for a kid about knowing you can order what you fancy and someone else will bring it and clear it away. For this dad, too.

Down at Maré, above the beach, we slipped even more into holiday mode. Relaxed service, DJ‑style playlists, sea views for days, and a toasted coconut mojito for me that will forever define ‘holiday cocktail’. It’s a family-friendly hangout that also feels pretty cool.

Beach adventures over the Atlantic Ocean

The journey down to beautiful Falésia Beach is a fun adventure before you arrive. From the resort, you follow the paths through the pines to a glass‑front lift or the staircase carved into the cliff. As you descend, the view opens up: golden sand stretching away beneath towering red cliffs, Atlantic waves rolling in. It was great bonding time just to stand and look at the view, and Gabe enjoyed it just as much as I did. One of those views where little worries drift away on the breeze, and we couldn’t get enough. It may have been a bit cold for sea swims on our February trip, but we had pools instead (see below).

Pools, tennis, padel and Marco Polo: staying active at Pine Cliffs

Active by Serenity Health Club was a great base to help stay active on our trip. The gym itself is simple but well equipped, with Technogym machines and big glass windows looking out over pine trees and glimpses of the sea. We didn’t spend hours in there, but it was a good reset – a chance to show Gabe that looking after your body is part of living well, and how to safely work the equipment (part of every young man’s training into adulthood).

The indoor pool was great fun and perfect for the time of year. We played Marco Polo, raced underwater lengths, and had a great time just splashing around and being silly. Kids love a pool, and it was a highlight for this big kid too.

On the tennis courts, it was time for me to show off, because Gabe needed to know his dad has a demon serve. My extra strength and precision meant he hardly ever won a point; it frustrated him at times, but I could see he also admired it, and I wasn’t going to let him win for the sake of it. There’s something crucial about your child seeing you in your element: not just as dad, but as someone with skills. Playing long rallies with the Algarve sun beating on our backs was the perfect way to work up an appetite for another excellent dinner too.

We booked a padel lesson with one of the Annabel Croft Tennis Academy coaches, and within minutes I understood why everyone’s hooked on it. Faster, more forgiving than tennis and very social, it had both of us laughing, lunging and celebrating ridiculous shots off the glass. It was a reminder that trying something new together can be just as bonding as what you already know.

Serenity and screen time are not mutually exclusive

I didn’t want to be Victorian dad on holiday, but was keen that Gabe stayed off screens as much as possible. We struck a deal where after active time together, he got screen time while I disappeared to the onsite spa at Serenity – The Art of Well Being. Soft, warm lighting, calm music and earthy tones set the tone for me releasing all the tension I hadn’t even realised I’d been carrying for months.

The herbal sauna and Himalayan salt sauna offer two different kinds of warmth. One scented and soothing, the other dry and revitalising. The wider Serenity experience is more than just a couple of hot rooms, though; it feels like a carefully choreographed journey from stressed to centred. My deep tissue massage felt like a reset: the therapist unpicked knots I didn’t even know existed. By the time I reappeared from my spa visits, Gabe had had his phone fix, and I’d chilled out. Exactly what you need on a dad-and-son break.

Chillaxed evenings and bonding time in our Golf Suite

Evenings were relaxing too: dinner, a slow wander back through the resort, then a movie on the iPad in our spacious Golf Suite, which was beautifully tidied each day after we’d thrown wet towels around and sundry blokey things. Though after a day of sun, sport, and good food (and for me, a couple of drinks), we never made it much past the 30–50 minute mark before dozing off like a pair of grandads.

There were small but lovely moments of closeness, like when we sat waiting for the bill and he leaned in for an unprompted cuddle. Showing me that he was enjoying our one-on-one time and relaxing just as much as I was – another dad win.

What I learned about parenting at Pine Cliffs Resort

This trip taught me more about myself as a dad than I expected. I realised I sometimes expect too much – I know he’s talented, coordinated, capable, so I push, even when we’re meant to be relaxing. Letting go of the urge to coach, and just playing alongside him, made him more engaged and made me enjoy it more.

It also reminded me that I can barely remember what it felt like to be his age. So my advice to myself is simple: be more patient, try to see things from his side, and deliberately plan more one‑on‑one time – trips like this, days out, even just regular activities that are ours. Because when you strip away the noise, you realise how few opportunities there are in normal life to sit across from your child, really listen, and just be together.

Pine Cliffs Resort gave us that space. The Luxury Collection is all about unique, memorable stays – but what I’ll remember most isn’t the five‑star trimmings, as impressive as they are. It’s swimming races, shared jokes on the fairway, ridiculous padel points off the glass, late‑night films on an iPad, and a quiet cuddle while waiting for the bill.

And that, for me, is where Pine Cliffs Resort stands out – it delivered all those moments, and more. I’ve already told my friends to book a trip there. It’s a keeper.
