A recent survey across the UK has uncovered significant disparities in LGBTQ+ inclusivity among universities, with students reporting varied experiences based on their choice of institution.

Conducted by Erobella in collaboration with Pollfish, the study involved over 2,000 students aged 18-24 rating their campuses’ inclusiveness.

Top 10 Most LGBTQ+ Friendly Universities (2025)

  1. University of Brighton – 8.7
  2. University of Derby – 8.0
  3. University of Nottingham – 7.8
  4. University of South Wales – 7.7
  5. Liverpool John Moores University – 7.6
  6. University of Leeds – 7.6

  9. University of Sussex – 7.5
  10. King’s College London – 7.4

Bottom 10 (Least LGBTQ+ Friendly)

  1. University of Oxford – 6.0
  2. University of Cambridge – 5.6
  3. University of Portsmouth – 5.5
  4. University of Bradford – 5.5
  5. University of Dundee – 5.2

The national average score was 6.7/10, reflecting varied campus cultures and safety levels for LGBTQ+ students.

Key Insights

  1. Modern vs. Elite Universities
    Brighton, Derby, Nottingham, and South Wales excel in inclusivity, while Oxford and Cambridge lag behind. Julie Fryatt from the University of Brighton stated, “Our Stonewall Gold Award shows that LGBTQ+ equity is a lived experience here.”
  2. North-South Divide
    Northern universities scored higher for inclusivity compared to many in London and the South East. Gemma Nice from Erobella noted, “A lack of inclusivity can harm LGBTQ+ students’ mental wellbeing and self-esteem.”

This survey highlights the ongoing need for universities to foster environments where all students feel safe and supported.
