Gambling has always been depicted as a masculine pastime. Head to any casino, online or offline, and chances are that the highest rollers will be men.
This is something that has been happening ever since casino games were a thing. But why is this happening? What is it about casino games that continue to resonate with men, generation after generation?
Thrill Seeking
One study found that men not only placed larger stakes than women in a casino but also gambled for twice as long as the average woman. This applies to both land-based casinos and online casinos, particularly with riskier games such as roulette.
This indicates that men are big thrill seekers. They love the risk of gambling everything in the hope that they can win big, too. Granted, this probably isn’t the best way to think when you’re gambling, but it is fair to say that gambling is a pastime that appeals more to men thanks to the whole thrill-seeking aspect of it. Perhaps this is because men are bigger risk-takers in general, or because women are far more logical thinkers.
Social Bonding
For a long time, land-based casinos were a hub for social interaction. They still are. Much like a pub, you can head to the casino and relax with a few of your friends. You might win some money, you might not. We don’t think it matters to most people (although, winning is probably preferable).
Casinos are great places to hang out with your friends; it is something a little bit different. You don’t even need to be gambling at a casino to get that whole social interaction. How many people have had poker nights, for instance? For decades, even when gambling was illegal in some places, you’d find plenty of backrooms playing host to casino games, because people loved the social aspect of it all.
Online casinos never used to offer the same type of social interaction, but this has changed, too. Most online casinos boast social features, including chatrooms and live dealer games. While this doesn’t perfectly replicate the whole social experience of gambling in a land-based casino, it does come close. Things will only improve, too. A few years back, it would have been almost unimaginable that the social features at online casinos would be so prevalent.
Casinos Have the Cool Factor
Casinos have always had that ‘cool’ factor for it. Think of any great mob movie, or spy movie (particularly James Bond), and casinos are made to look incredibly cool. Men just love that cool factor. Many people probably think they look nice and suave when they are pushing their chips on the table to make a bet on the roulette wheel.
Being a member of a land-based casino in the UK (even if it isn’t that hard to become a member) just looks plain cool.
The Games Are Fun To Play
Let’s be honest, casino games are fun to play. Sure, you get that dopamine hit when you win (and this is what most people are chasing), but casino games themselves are fun. Poker, blackjack, and roulette are especially fun. People aren’t spending hours and hours playing these games in the hope they can win some money (although, that helps), they are playing because they are genuinely enjoying playing those games.
Many of these casinos have not been changed for generations. People are still playing versions of roulette devised near the start of the 20th Century. You can’t say that for many other games!
Men Love Coming Up With Game Strategies
It seems that men love casino games that have a bit more strategy to them. We suppose men like to think they can ‘break’ the game, or come up with some logical way of, hopefully, winning more money.
Weirdly, women are not like this. Women are typically bigger fans of slot machines, which require little in the way of strategy. Although, they are far more casual and cheaper gaming experiences.
Head online, and you’ll find tons of men chatting about their gambling strategies, asking for strategies, etc. Even decades ago, people were producing books on how to ‘beat the system’.
Final Thoughts
Casino games have resonated with men for decades. This is, partly, down to the fact that men are seeking the thrill of the win. However, a lot is down to the social experience, the fun factor, and, of course, the cool factor. As long as gambling remains legal, men will continue to love it.
