A recent survey by Bridgestone has revealed strong support among UK drivers for improved road safety measures aimed at young motorists.
Key findings indicate that 57% of the 2,000 respondents advocate for a Graduated Driving Licence (GDL), which would provide a structured learning approach for new drivers.
Notably, 70% believe that tyre safety education should be included in driver training. Other insights include 50% supporting a ‘recently passed’ sign for up to 12 months after passing the test and a one-passenger limit for new drivers during their first year. Additionally, 39% think new drivers should take a refresher course, while 21% suggest restricting them to driving within 50 miles of home for the first six to twelve months.
Bridgestone’s Helen Roe emphasised the need for enhanced education in road and tyre safety for young drivers, pointing out that many do not regularly check their tyres.
“Our findings reinforce the importance of road and tyre safety education, especially among young drivers who may be at greater risk on the roads shortly after passing their driving tests. It’s clear that motorists want better preparation for new drivers, and tyre safety is crucial for reducing accidents and keeping roads safer.”
