Jaecoo has launched its inaugural model in the United Kingdom – the Jaecoo 7, a premium SUV designed to impress both on and off the road, writes Tim Barnes-Clay.
Jaecoo is a new brand of Chinese vehicle manufacturer Chery – and order books are now open.
Combining off-road capabilities with urban sophistication, the 7 is available in front-wheel drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. The SUV’s 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine delivers 147 PS and 275 Nm of torque, with a fuel economy of 37.7 mpg (WLTP).
The front-wheel drive only PHEV variant features an 18.3 kW battery, and offers an all-electric range of 56 miles. When combined with the engine, total output reaches 204 PS and 310 Nm of torque. This model excels in efficiency, providing a combined range of 745 miles from its 60-litre fuel tank. It achieves an impressive 403 mpg, or 47 mpg, in high depletion scenarios, with CO2 emissions as low as 23g/km.
The four-wheel drive model enhances its off-road prowess with a 600 mm wading depth and seven driving modes, including Sand, Mud, Snow, and Off-Road settings, enabling smooth navigation across diverse terrains. The 7 also features a Bosch-developed Integrated Power Brake system that simulates a differential lock for rapid response times.
Aesthetically, the Chinese SUV flaunts a sleek design with bold lines and stylish details. The front boasts split daytime running lights and a large vertical grille, while the profile features an athletic crease line and flush-fitting door handles, contributing to its aerodynamic efficiency. At the rear, a full-length light bar accentuates the SUV’s wide stance.
Inside, the Jaecoo 7 offers a luxurious and tech-savvy cabin with a 14.8-inch high-resolution touchscreen, a 10.25-inch LCD instrument panel, and a head-up display. Additional conveniences include multi-colour interior lighting, a wireless mobile phone charging pad, an eight-speaker Sony audio system, and a panoramic roof, creating a premium environment for all passengers.
Safety is paramount in the 7, which has achieved global five-star safety standards and comes with a seven-year or 100,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty. The advanced driver-assistance systems include a 540-degree panoramic camera system, providing exceptional driving visibility.
Jaecoo takes its name from a fusion of the German word “Jäger” (meaning “hunter”) and the English term “cool”. With experience from a successful joint venture with a renowned off-road vehicle manufacturer, Jaecoo aims to blend classic and contemporary automotive innovation.
With three individual rear seats, the Jaecoo 7 can comfortably accommodate up to five occupants. The versatile seating arrangement allows for easy installation of child seats, too. The rear seats can also be collapsed to expand the boot space for larger items, making it a practical option for families on the go.
