In a world where hybrid SUVs are multiplying like rabbits on cheap electricity, the BYD Seal U DM-i Boost lands with a firm Chinese handshake and a mission to disrupt.
It is a plug-in hybrid family SUV that doesn’t scream, “Look at me”, but it certainly wants you to notice. This BYD model is also ideal for those who couldn’t care less about cars but want something vaguely modern, vaguely green, and vaguely exciting to lease on a Tuesday.

Power and Performance
It pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a single electric motor, offering 218 horsepower and 0–62 mph in 8.6 seconds. It is front-wheel drive only, so forget mud-plugging. An 18.3 kWh battery gives around 50 miles of electric-only range, perfect for quietly sneaking around town while saving the planet or at least making your neighbours think you are. If you’re not heavy-footed, the total range is a massive 671 miles.
Charging time on a 7kW wall box is about 2.5 hours, and it’ll do 0–100% on a public DC charger in around 35 minutes – although don’t expect Tesla Supercharger speeds.

Practical, Not Pretty
The Seal U is all about substance. With the rear seats folded, there’s 1,400 litres of boot space, and the cabin’s airy and adult-friendly. A huge rotating touchscreen handles everything – climate, media, and probably the central heating back home, too. Faux leather, soft-ish plastics, and a layout that’s clearly been designed by someone who’s seen a Tesla and thought, “That, but cheaper.”
The Chinese car isn’t thrilling to drive. Soft steering, calm ride, not much feel – but it’s not pretending to be a sports car. This BYD is pretending to be clever. And at £33,315, it sort of is.

Competitors and Final Thoughts
You are looking at foes like the Kia Sportage PHEV, Hyundai Tucson PHEV, and MG HS plug-in – all solid and sensible. But the BYD undercuts most of them and offers a longer EV range to keep the green mentalists pacified.
The Seal U isn’t cool, it’s not fast, and it’s not something a petrolhead will ever dream of. But as a functional, affordable, fuel-sipping family box? It is annoyingly good.
