Tesla Model Y Long Range Review

Before Tesla started introducing steering yokes and quirky apps, the Model Y Long Range was the brand’s most sensible offering.

It resembles a slightly enlarged Model 3 but has enough SUV characteristics to make you feel like you’ve made a mature decision. While its appearance might be awkward – it has a certain charm.

Power and Range

Equipped with dual motors and all-wheel drive, the older Long Range version delivers around 384 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Its top speed is about 135 mph. Tesla claims a WLTP range of 331 miles, but in real-world conditions, you’re more likely to achieve around 280 miles, especially if you drive as though you’re in a game of Mario Kart.

Charging is convenient through Tesla’s Supercharger network, which remains one of the coolest and handiest features about the brand. You can charge from 10% to 80% in about 25 minutes – unless someone else is occupying the charging bay with their feet up, scrolling through TikTok.

Ride and Handling

The ride quality is decent. The suspension is too firm, leaving the car to bang over potholes – and the steering feels numb, but it handles reasonably well thanks to its low centre of gravity. Just don’t expect it to corner quite like a Porsche Cayman.

Tesla’s software used to be a highlight, but it now feels ‘so so’. The user interface hasn’t significantly changed, the updates lack excitement, and competitors like Hyundai, BMW, and even MG are catching up quickly. While Tesla still maintains a lead, it’s narrowing – although there is a new Model Y out now – so watch this space.

Final Verdict

The older Model Y Long Range still makes a lot of sense. It is fast, practical, and surprisingly efficient. However, it’s no longer the Y-Front moistening, tech-forward vehicle it once was. The ride is stiff, and the interior is sparse. But, if you’re looking for a reliable, spacious EV with decent performance, the Tesla gets the job done.
