Forage
Foraging is having a moment, as soaring food prices and desire for self-sufficiency propel a new generation of foragers. Eco chef, forager and sustainability expert Justin Horne shares some tips for beginners
Keep it seasonal
Spring and summer in the UK are the easiest times to start foraging. Plants are fresh, abundant, and easier to recognise, and even a short walk can turn into something more engaging for both adults and children. Five minutes from my front door in Oxfordshire, I regularly spot 12–15 edible wild herbs along a single stretch of hedgerow.
Foraging is one of the simplest ways to show children where food really comes from. It builds confidence outdoors, encourages curiosity, and slows everything down in the best possible way.I first learned this as a child, foraging with my grandmother in the woodlands and beaches of Devon and the hedgerows of Cambridge. She kept it simple—look closely, use your senses, and never guess. That approach still underpins everything I do, both in the kitchen and outside.
