Brits have revealed that the chaos of the traditional family get together and bickering over Christmas dinner are among the things they will miss most this year – despite previously finding them annoying.

With the UK gearing up for the prospect of a socially distant Christmas, a nationwide poll by Cockburn’s Port has revealed the ‘traditions’ British families love to hate.

While 62% claim they will miss these things because they are all part of the Christmas experience, 28% admit they enjoy these seemingly annoying parts of the festive period.

Among the top 10 traditions Brits will most miss this Christmas fighting over the TV remote, feigning enthusiasm for underwhelming gifts and the last-minute dash to buy presents all ranked highly.

1.       The chaos of all the family being together

2.       Taking the mickey out of parents/siblings/loved ones

3.       Last-minute rush to do the Christmas shopping

4.       Pretending to be enthusiastic about presents

5.       Spending time with the in-laws

The study also found that although Christmas ’tis the season to be jolly, people were most likely to associate it with the words “stressful” and “expensive”.

Almost half (48%) of the 2,000 Britons questioned even claimed they needed a week’s holiday to recover from the festive period. As a result, 47% confessed they’re looking forward to the prospect of lower-key Christmas celebrations.

In comparison, two in five (40%) said they were secretly “relieved” at the prospect of enforced social distancing from extended family.

It also emerged that with the prospect of spending more time alone this Christmas, a quarter (25%) plan to spend more money on themselves to ease the pain of being separated from loved ones.
